Commissioned Table
Crafted to resemble a Roche-Bobois Spinnaker table, with a Scandinavian influence, this dining table is made of Pennsylvanian walnut and northern white ash. 5 strips of 1/4" steam bent ash laminates compose each of the legs, which are mortised into the underside of the table. Top displays inlay of 1/4" ash strips. The legs are canted at 8 and 15 degrees; their placement makes this table remarkably sturdy with a very spare footprint. 31”H x 40”W x 80”L.

Lambda Barchair
If Picasso were to design a barchair, it might resemble something like this. The cantilevered seat takes cues from Reitveld’s Zig Zag chair, and combines elements of Nakashima’s Conoid chair with Thomas Moser’s bowback stool. My goal in the creation of this piece was a solid wooden chair that captured movement in form, while also responding to body movement. Tested to 225 lbs, the Lambda sits comfortably and lends a gentle sway as it naturally adjusts to your body position. Lambda, being letter 11 of the Greek alphabet, seems reflective to me of both the front leg outline as well as the swooping L shape of the profile view.

32”h x 22”d x 18”w. $950.

This cd storage cabinet is an efficient way to organize up to 400 of your favorite compact discs. Library card catalogues may have gone the way of the dinosaur, but don’t tell my cd collection that it has as well! These repurposed card-catalogue trays make up the perfect size for compact discs, and click purposefully in place when slid home.

Pictured model is made of classic rift sawn American white oak, with walnut and brass-faced drawers. Oak and walnut dowels secure the mortise-and-tenon joinery, and the handcut dovetails of the drawer match those of the original card trays. Construction employs the use of no metal fasteners in the structure of the piece. This can be called Arts and Crafts revitalized, and speaks of lasting quality as well as humble elegance.

32”h x 23”d x 21”w.

9 drawer model as pictured, $1320.

Also available in 6 drawer model, in cherry or oak, for $1125.

Holds a cacophony of sounds.

Commissioned Storage Bench
Storage Bench/Blanket Chest/Toybox

Mortise-and-tenon frame construction, pinned with oak dowels the old fashioned way. Tongue and groove lid with breadboard ends functions as a seat when closed. Mortised slats hold the removable bottom panel in place. Gas-injected lid stay clicks the lid positively open, and also provides a soft close to prevent slamming of fingers.

Made of red and white native oak, the metal strapping and barrel top also give this chest a wine cask look and feel. If you’re driving the wine country roads around Lake Cayuga, you might see something that resembles this. Teak oil and satin wax finish. 20"D x 21"H x 51"L, can build to order.

String Theory Bench
With String Theory, the idea was to design something that juxtaposed two main aspects of good furniture: visual intrigue and strong joinery. From a joinery standpoint, the dowels are all that is needed to provide solid seating given to a slight flex. The pockets underneath provide a convenient storage area for a remote control or a charging iPod. In physics, there is a theory that universes are parallel and made up and connected with elaborate strings, unifying the whole. This is called String Theory. I think the sound of it resonates with the juxtaposition of diverse materials chosen for this bench.

This bench consists of quarter-sawn American white oak, South American purpleheart, New Zealand lemonwood, solid aluminum, genuine fishnet, and leather. This bench is the second place award winner in the creative category at the 2006 IWF Atlanta Design Emphasis.

Propeller Study Bench
Designed to respond to the constraints of my studio living space, this bench has since become my most utilitarian piece of furniture. The construction developed out of the idea of having a bench that also served as a drafting table, with a storage shelf for study materials, and a drawer for drafting supplies. This model turned out to be a very intricate prototype, employing converging tapered lines composed of curly cherry, white holly, and tulipwood. My intent was to have fun with shapes, colors, and materials, and to test the limits of irregular joinery. Aluminum dowels form a structural accent, as well as the unique tulip seat joint, which I call the propeller.

Congruency Bookshelf
Congruence: (n.) Harmony, conformity, or correspondence; a point of agreement.

Angular, modern, and uncumbersome, fusing the unique irregularities of common furniture wood with traditional yet accented joinery. The need for a bookshelf as well as a place to house my aquarium fostered the idea for this canted bookshelf, fashioned out of native curly cherry and wormy/curly maple, with tulipwood accents. The prospect of living abroad necessitated a knock-down design. The addition of aluminum stretchers at the base to form a shoe rack or additional shelving seemed a fitting and practical way to combine all these elements as well as extend the function of the bookshelf.

Handles are cut in for ease of movement, and the tactile shape of the maple thumb tusks match the inverted shape of the side panels for symmetry. For an exotic accent, protruded removable tulipwood pegs conceal the countersunk screw holes which can be replaced after numerous disassemblies.

This piece is 38 inches wide at the base, 38 inches high and 15 inches deep. Broken down and stacked, it measures 4 by 15 by 38 inches. It is finished with a coat of pure boiled linseed oil, then multiple coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane.

Ottoman
Lending a gentle “whoosh” when sat upon, kids love to do it again and again. And, why stop them? Solid mortise and tenon joinery ensure this to withstand much kicking around, and a non-typical bar frame support allows for easy cushion removal.

Top-grain pigmented leather is easily cleaned and tightly stitched at corners for a trim modern aesthetic. Rustic in nature, this arts and crafts-influenced ottoman was built in tandem with my pecan Sling chair. I was enamored with how the book-matched legs formed a flame pattern, making them appear to be on fire. Like turning a page, each side continues to create motion in what is typically a stationary piece.
